How to Scan Documents on Android Without an App
Android phones ship with capable cameras but no great built-in scanner. Instead of downloading a 100MB+ app full of ads and subscriptions, you can scan straight from Chrome — free, in about two minutes.
Scan from Chrome in 6 steps
- Open Chrome and visit Scanner.cam.
- Tap Scan Camera and grant camera permission.
- Frame the document and capture. You can also upload existing photos from your gallery.
- Fine-tune the four corner handles — the 2.5x loupe gives pixel-level precision.
- Pick Magic Color (removes shadows, keeps color) or Clean B/W (crisp black text).
- Tap Export for a watermark-free PDF in A4 or US Letter.
What about Google Drive's scanner?
Google Drive has a scan feature (tap the camera icon), and it works for basics. Downsides: scans upload to your Drive by default, editing controls are minimal, and multi-page PDFs are clunky. A browser scanner keeps everything on-device with better perspective correction.
Why Android users prefer the browser route
- Zero storage cost — no 100MB+ app eating phone space.
- No subscriptions — scanner apps commonly charge monthly for clean PDFs.
- Privacy — files never leave your phone; nothing uploads to a cloud.
- Works on any Android — Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, Oppo — if it runs Chrome, it scans.
Getting the sharpest scan
- Shoot on a dark, contrasting surface.
- Avoid direct overhead light; soft daylight is best.
- Keep the phone parallel to the document.
- Batch all pages first, then export a single multi-page PDF.
